Artist Statement
When searching for terms such as “cleaning” or “dusting”, the images that first appear are all of women. Inspired by advertisements from the 50’s and 60’s, That’s What Wives are for! depicts isolated body parts of women in stereotypical or seemingly sexual actions. Examining the male gaze and society’s disconnection of women’s bodies from their individuality, these paintings serve as a reminder that past issues surrounding sexism are still present today. Highlighting the objectification of women, these paintings purposefully don’t give any identifying factors. The use of pastel colors is essential to the paintings, as they are reminiscent of the diners and cars that so strongly represent those decades. Constructive Criticism is a lighthearted piece that presents the ever common topic of how people believe women should behave. You’re too feminist. Not feminist enough. Are you really a feminist if you don’t have an opinion on XYZ? Why is it called feminism when it really should just be called ‘being a decent human being’? I intend for this piece to provide a sense of comic relief, while still inspiring deeper thoughts on what it means to be a woman in today’s world.
