Gallery Talk with the Artists

Friday, March 16, 11 am. Ridderhof Martin Gallery.

The exhibit will feature pieces by Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov, a husband and wife artist team who met in Moscow when they were both studying at the Surikov Academy of Art in 1989. A major symbol in their work has been the Tree of Life, a religious and cultural symbol representing the constant cycle of death, transformation and renewal. Using numerous mediums, Scherer and Ouporov’s work also includes Russian icon painting, figurative realism and medieval manuscript illumination.

Adjunct Studio Art Faculty Exhibition Works by Scott Ligon

Ligon’s short animated film “Escape Velocity” was shown at 7pm directly following the opening.

“Escape Velocity” explores the connection between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (A.D.H.D) and creativity. The film has won several awards and has played in festivals and theaters all over the world. Ligon’s digital works have been shown at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Very Special Arts (VSA) Show “Transformation” at a juried group exhibition, “Small Wonders,” held at the Pharmaka Gallery in Los Angeles’ Gallery Row; and at an alumni show at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

Talking History in Material Culture: Igbo and Akan Signs in Early Virginia

Organized in conjunction with guest curator Rachek Malcolm- Woods, the exhibition follows the transmission of African culture to the New World , specifically antebellum Virginia, and demonstrates the existence and survival of Igbo and Akan cultures despite the subjugation of slavery. In the exhibit, Dr. Malcom-Woods incorporates cemetery stones, African textiles and other artifacts to demonstrate the existence of material culture in the United States that contain aesthetics of African origin.

This exhibit featured 25 pieces from artists including Carola Gollner, Malgorzata Jankowska, Ancz E. Kokowski, Karina Spechter and M. Straub. The artwork was displayed in a reproduction of the Kunstoffice, a gallery that serves as a concept space where artists and those interested in art gather to discuss relevant issues concerning each exhibit. The exhibit was curated by Peter Meyer and Carole Garmon.
