Dazzle: Masterpieces from the Permanent Collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

“Dazzle” presents finely crafted objects in gold, silver, gemstones and other precious materials from VMFA’s collections. Highlights include jewels by French designer Jean Schlumberger (1907-1987), who worked for Tiffany & Co. in New York; pre-Columbian and African gold; sculptures by Czechoslovakian artist Alphonse Mucha (1860 – 1939) and Ukraine native Alexander Archipenko (1887-1964).

Nickel and Detwiler: 25 Year Retrospective

This exhibit showcased 25 years of artwork by Lorene Nickel and Joseph Detwiler, wife and husband.  “Retrospective,” a sampling of their vast work, will include representative pieces that display the different stylistic and technical periods that the couple has explored. While the inspiration and influence for their pieces widely, much of the couple’s current work that will be exhibited reflects recent trips they made to India and Middle East.

Brain H. Peterson’s photography has been shown in more than 30 solo exhibitions since 1980. His work, which has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the East Coast, is included in the collections of such institutions as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Amon Carter Museum and the Library of Congress. Peterson, who earned a bachelor’s degree in music composition from the University of Pennsylvania and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Delaware, has taught photography at the University of Delaware, Swarthmore College, the University of the Arts and the Tyler School of Art.

Scott Belville is an associate professor of art at teh University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art. He has had solo exhibitions at of museums and galleries such as the Opelika Arts Association Gallery, the Kavesh Gallery, Thomas Barry Fine Arts and the Jus de Pomme Gallery.

Constructs: Abstract Painting by 9 Virginia Artists

The exhibit features works by Virginia artists Sally Bowring, Greg Carbo, Davi Det Hompson, Reni Gower, Chris Gregson, Steve Griffin, Rob Johnson, Cindy Neuschwander and Javier Tapier. These nine artists explore painting through the inventive use of collage, innovated construction techniques, or unusual painting processes. Highlighting singular works of art fabricated through the composition of many elements, “Constructs” promotes constructed images as a viable and veritable approach to painting within Virginia’s contemporary art community.
